Teatro di Roma and MACRO are pleased to present
BUFFALO
2nd Edition June 2021
#Supplement
curated by Michele Di Stefano
a Teatro di Roma and Azienda Speciale Palaexpo co-production
with the support of the Istituto Svizzero di Roma – Swiss Institute of Rome
How vast is the distance between the theatre and the museum? Boundless.
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni hosted BUFFALO, a window on contemporary performance and dance curated by Michele Di Stefano for the Teatro di Roma, in 2019: an opening giving onto the boundless space that becomes the venue of an encounter between artistic visions, languages and sensibilities, between the performance arts and visual art, as well as between two of Rome’s cultural institutions. In particular, the aim is to call into question the standard interpretation of the very concepts of “museum” and of “theatre” and of the specific functions of their respective venues, seeking instead to intercept or even to free up unexplored potential and expanded horizons. This surmounting of categories in disciplines, as well as in places, is already implicit in the very nature of artistic research, whatever field one operates in. The Teatro di Roma and the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo are attempting to develop forms of ongoing collaboration on the Roman scene capable of lending support, space and encouragement to those artistic practices and experimentations that increasingly frequently and unashamedly display a will to trespass and to mutually enhance the languages of dance, video art, music, painting, theatre and installations.
The 2021 edition of BUFFALO provides the opportunity for a fully-fledged co-production between the Teatro di Roma and the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, marking an important point in the development of this proposal for open exchange. The festival is not entering the MACRO as an occasional guest but rather as an element of design capable of fitting organically and consistently into the “Museum for preemptive imagination”, the three-dimensional magazine that regularly offers visitors a pathway in which the move from one room to the next takes place under the banner of an interdisciplinary transition, of an encounter between different languages, experimental methods of display. BUFFALO at the Macro creates a further layer of meaning to ensure that the various languages of artistic research speak to each other, to ensure that the experience of beauty and of the presence of bodies can joyfully nourish our gaze, transforming the way we think and build the community.

In this renewed edition of BUFFALO we will be focusing in particular on audience management in order to ensure a pleasant and safe experience in compliance with safety measures. BUFFALO’s programme consists of a daily schedule of non-simultaneous performances; admission is via a single daily ticket entitling the holder to view all the performances scheduled for that day as well as providing access to the MACRO exhibition halls. To optimise management of the visitor flow in the various spaces, the public will be organised in two perfectly equivalent pathways (pathway A and pathway B) offering exactly the same performances but at different times.
Daily ticket (Friday from 6 pm to 9 pm; Saturday and Sunday from 5 pm to 9 pm) full price € 15,00, reduced price € 10,00. Buy tickets here.
